We need to talk about the Hungarian “GY”

“Gy” is one of the specialties of the Hungarian language and alphabet. If you don’t know  yet how to pronounce it, check out our crash-course on the Hungarian alphabet.

We found 23 different words with only 1 and 2 additional letters before the “GY”! Did we miss some?

ágy – bed
egy – one
így – so (do sth. this way)
úgy – so (do sth. that way)
ügy – matter [affair, issue, business]
begy – crop (of a bird)
fagy – frost
fogy – to lose weight, to lessen
hagy – to let, to leave sth.
hegy – mountain
hogy – how / so (in order that)
húgy – urine
jegy – ticket
kegy – grace
lágy – soft / mild
légy – fly (insect)
megy – to go
nagy – big
négy – four
rügy – bud (botan.)
vagy – you are
vágy – desire
