Years ago, I took a Hungarian class at the local Hungarian church in Detroit. I believe the instructor was born in Hungary and lived there during the Communist era. He told us how the word “társ” was perfectly acceptable, but the word, “nyelvtárs” was often used by the Communists as the Hungarian version of the English word, “comrade”. He said that “nyelvtárs” translated to “mind-think-partner”, implying that that person could not think for themself — that the Communist party did the thinking for them, and that they all thought alike. He said that it was very offensive to use the term, “nyelvtárs”, unless you were a member of the Communist party.
